Ash Grunwald (VIC)
Winner of Melbourne Blues Appreciation Societys Blues Performer of the Year 2003.
Melbournes Ash Grunwald is an inimitable modern blues talent. His rhythmic acoustic blues guitar, soulful vocals and unique song writing has made Ash one of Australias hottest new blues players.
Winning the Best Emerging Talent Award and Male Vocalist of the Year at the Australian Blues Awards (The Chain Awards) 2003, Ash Grunwald is making his mark on the Australian blues scene. Recently he has played festivals such as Blues at Bridgetown WA 2002 and The Melbourne International Music and Blues Festival 2003. A highlight of 2003, Ash ventured to Canada to play at The Salmon Arm Blues and Roots Festival with international acts such as Jeff Healy, Sue Foley and Big Jack Johnson. He blew the audiences away with his impromptu performance as support for headline act, Angelique Kidjo. His initiative made him the hit of the festival.
Drawn to the blues of Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and Howlin Wolf in his youth, Ash, with his African heritage, has embraced the form and style of early blues musicians.
I suppose you could describe my music as delta influenced, swampy, acoustic-electric blues with an emphasis on vocals and different grooves
Ash creates an intensity in his performance with deep, commanding vocals and thick, rhythmic blues grooves. His debut solo acoustic album Introducing is released through Black Market Music. This spare recording of voice, guitar and stompbox interprets the tradition with a fresh attitude. Influenced by blues artists such as Son House, Howlin Wolf, Junior Kimbrough and Collards Greens & Gravy, this album was named No. 1 Album for the year 2002. (Cue Sunday Herald Sun Lee Howard)
"The way I recorded the album was similar to how delta bluesmen like Robert Johnson and Son House would have recorded. I just sat down and did the songs and we rolled the tape..."
