The Blue Ruins (NSW)
The Blue Ruins consists of Allan and Kate Watts and they are an up and coming father/daughter blues/folk/roots/soul duo from the South Coast of NSW. Allan and Kate have been playing together for three years and have been making their mark by playing in many different venues and events.
Kate is a young and determined young lady who has many years of vocal training under her belt. She has been described to have one of the biggest voices this country is yet to hear with a style like no other when she picks up the guitar which she plays upside down left handed. Kate also prides herself on her ability to play rhythmic Djembe, powerful stomp box and anything else that may help to enhance the duo's gutsy sound.
Allan is a well seasoned, self taught, lyrical blues guitarist with his own style. He had been playing guitar in many different bands for 35 years before settling with The Blue Ruins and has such a strong passion not only for his instrument but also for blues and roots music. His style, passion and feel make him an admirable musician.
Allan and Kate have played along side some amazing artists such as Aria winner Josh Pyke, European based Australian punk band The Scare, The Soul Movers and Deniz Tek, and other up and coming artists like Russell Crawford, Kim Churchill, Daniel Champagne, Dub Dub Goose, Shaun Kirk and Beautifully Mad... just to name a few. They were nominated for Independent Artist - "Blues/Roots - Song of the Year" MUSIC OZ AWARDS 2010 and have now been named as being one of the top 5 Independent Blues and Roots artists in Australia.
They have won such competitions as ARCH (anti-racism and Community harmony) CD and recording package and were crowned winners of the busking competition here at the Australian Blues Music Festival in 2010.
They were also featured on the Acousitka compilation Album in 2009 For their song 'I'm Alright' which was broadcast all through college radios in USA. They also receive regular air play on South East ABC radio and on Rick Keyes radio show in California, USA. In 2009 they were in the top 25 roots chart on Triple j unearthed for four of their songs off their first self titled album.
As father and daughter, they work extremely well together and have a presence on stage that is indescribably unique. Although they're not the finished article yet, The Blue Ruins are definitely a duo to keep your eye on.
